The spring from which it arose may have been the physical counterpart to the stream which arose from the Temple in Ezekiel's vision. The Second Image is an architect's conception of the Temple described by Ezekiel. The Third Image is a depiction of the divisions of the Land among the tribes of Israel. It uses a satellite photo as a background. ] [ Disclaimer: The illustrations which I have used for these studies are useful for visualizing Ezekiel's words. They vary in detail, but they provide a number of insights derived from careful study of the text. It should be noted, however, that those who provide these illustrations vary widely in their theological ideas. In a few cases, the ideas are heretical. Let the reader therefore search the Scriptures for clarity and light. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: In Ezekiel 47, the LORD gives Ezekiel a vision of waters which flow out from the Temple. This may have been an extension, metaphorically, of the waters of Siloam, earlier called the waters of Shiloh. These waters were used to clean the temple and wash the sacrifices; but the waters described in the vision are far greater than any of the natural waters in the vicinity of the Temple. In the words of Albert Barnes' Commentary, "Compare Isaiah 44:8 [44:1-8; Joel 3:18]. Ezekiel's description is adopted and modified by Zechariah [13:1; 14:8] and in Rev. (compare the marginal references) [Revelation 22:1, 17]. Hebrew tradition speaks of a spring of water, named Etham, said to be identical with the well-waters of Nephtoah Joshua 18:15, on the west of the temple, whose waters were conducted by pipes into the temple-courts for the uses needed in the ministration of the priests. The waters of Shiloah Psalms 46:4; Isaiah 8:6 flowed from the rocks beneath the temple-hill. It is quite in the manner of Ezekiel's vision to start from an existing feature and thence proceed to an ideal picture from where to draw a spiritual lesson. The deepening of the waters in their course shows the continual deepening of spiritual life and multiplication of spiritual blessings in the growth of the kingdom of God. So long as the stream is confined to the temple-courts, it is merely a small rill, for the most part unseen, but when it issues from the courts it begins at once to deepen and to widen. So on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the company of believers, little then but presently to develop into the infant Church in Jerusalem." The Waters (1-12). Ezekiel saw water flowing eastward from under the threshold of the Temple; it was also flowing out of the south side (1-2). His guide led him eastward, a thousand royal cubits (1750 feet) at a time, through increasingly deep waters. First, the waters were ankle deep, then knee deep, then waist deep, and finally the waters were deep enough to swim in. In all, the guide measured 4,000 cubits, or about 1.3 miles (3-6). The guide brought him back to the river bank which they had left, and trees were already growing on it (7). And the guide explained that the river flowed down to the Dead Sea where it healed the waters so that fishermen were able to catch fish of many kinds from one end of it to the other (8-10). However, the swamps and marshes will be left salty (11). All kinds of fruit trees will grow along both banks of the river. They will bear fruit each month, and their fruit will be used for food and their leaves for healing (12). The Land (13-23). After this vision, the LORD described the boundaries of the Land of Israel (13-20). He then said that it was to be divided among the tribes of Israel as an inheritance. Foreigners and their children will also be allowed to inherit within the tribe where they live (21-23). [ Sermons: James Philip. Patrick Fairbairn. Matthew Henry. Matthew Poole. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide.
