[ Illustration: The First Image relates to the symbolism in today's chapter, which is of a regathering of Israel and of a unity such as the reunion of Joseph with his father, as depicted. The Second Image shows the divisions of the Land and gives an alternate interpretation of the extent of the eastern boundary. The Third Image provides a close up view of one of the gates of the city. ] [ Disclaimer: The illustrations which I have used for these studies are useful for visualizing Ezekiel's words. They vary in detail, but they provide a number of insights derived from careful study of the text. It should be noted, however, that those who provide these illustrations vary widely in their theological ideas. In a few cases, the ideas are heretical. Let the reader therefore search the Scriptures for clarity and light. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: In Ezekiel 48, Ezekiel's visions come to a close with a description of the allotment of the land among the 12 tribes. In this vision, no tribes inherit anything east of the Jordan, as was the case in the original conquest under Joshua. However, north of the Sea of Galilee the allotments widen eastward. The western borders go to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Also, the northern and southern borders of each tribe are parallel to one another, which was hardly ever the case in the original division of the land. Also, the chapter describes a central sanctuary with seven tribes on the north and five tribes on the south. In and around the sanctuary are allotments for the prince, the Levites, the Priests, and representatives of the tribes. This whole area is holy and belongs to the LORD (Ezekiel 45:1-7). It is also worth noting that the sons of Jacob's wives are nearest to the central portion of the land, and the sons of the slave wives are furthest away. 1. The Land Apportionment (1-29). a. Northern: The Inheritance of the Seven Northern Tribes (1-7). Dan, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, Reuben, and Judah inherit in the North. Reuben and half of the tribe of Manasseh had previously been on the eastern side of the Jordan River. b. Central: The Inheritance of the LORD - The Gift (Oblation, Heave-Offering, "Terumah") (8-22). 1). The LORD's Portion: The Larger Oblation (Gift) (8-9). The whole central region is a gift to the LORD, but he is especially in possession of the Temple and its Sanctuary (the Holy of Holies), in particular. 2). The Priest's Portion: The Smaller Oblation (Gift) (10-12). The Priests who are descendants of Zadok have a portion within the large central part of the land. 3). The Levites' Portion (13-14). The Levites have an area which is equal to the Priests' portion. 4). The Citizens' Portion (15-20). The citizens of the new city came from all of the tribes of Israel. They farmed the land allotted to them. 5). The Prince's Portion (21-22). The Prince had a two-part portion on the east and on the west. Between the two parts were the portions of the priests, the Levites, the sanctuary, and the city. c. Southern: The Inheritance of the Five Southern Tribes (23-29). Benjamin, Simeon, Issachar, Zebulun, and Gad inherit in the South. Issachar and Zebulun had previously been in the north. Gad had previously been on the eastern side of the Jordan River. 2. The New City (30-35). The city has three gates on each side, one for each of the twelve tribes. On the north are the gates for Reuben Judah, and Levi. On the east are the gates for Joseph, Benjamin, and Dan. On the south are the gates for Simeon, Issachar, and Zebulun. On the west are the gates for Gad, Asher, and Naphtali. The circumference of the city is 18,000 units, presumably "measures," as in the context (verse 30). However, "measures" is not a specific unit; it only designates the act or the result of measuring. Speculation on the circumference of the city varies widely -- from 6 miles (1.5 miles on each side), to 37 miles (9.25 miles on each side), to 32,000 miles (8,000 miles on each side). Various commentators note that Josephus, a Jewish historian in the time of Jesus, said that the circumference of Jerusalem in his day was 33 stadia, or 4 miles (1 mile on each side). The 6 mile figure seems to be more in accord with the other measurements in chapters 40-48. But the important thing about the city is that its name is "The LORD is there." It is his presence, not the size or the other details about the city, that make it unique and very special. [ Sermons: Patrick Fairbairn. Matthew Henry. Matthew Poole.
