Image 2: Solomon's Temple: Interior View (c. 2008) ESV Study Bible (2008) Private Collection Image Credit: Year in the Bible [ Illustration: The First Image shows a house of worship with a grave. Such a thing would be unthinkable in the Temple described in today's chapter. It would make the Temple unclean until and unless it was removed. The Second Image depicts the interior of Solomon's Temple. In Ezekiel's vision in today's chapter, the LORD came into the Temple, reversing his exit from the Temple in Chapter 10. The Cherubim depicted in the Holy of Holies are based on images from Babylonian Ruins. Others depict them as human-like or a combination of human and animal, as mentioned in various Scriptures. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: In Ezekiel 43, the LORD gives instruction for cleansing the Temple in preparation for inaugurating its services. Much discussion has centered on the meaning of "the carcasses of their kings" by which the Temple was defiled (verses 7 and 9). Does it refer to an honorific burial on the Temple premises (as in the first illustration above) - - or perhaps in the high-places which they used as a substitute for the Temple (6:1-7, 13)? Does it refer to burial nearby, as was the case with David and the Davidic kings? Does it refer to a funeral service within the confines of the Temple? Does it refer to Moloch, one of their idols, whose name has the same consonants as Melech, the Hebrew word for king? Or perhaps it refers, in some sense, to the symbolic slaughter depicted in chapter 9 verses 6-11, which began in the sanctuary of the Temple and proceeded out toward the city of Jerusalem. Ancient men were not spared, nor was anyone (king or commoner) who was an idolater and therefore did not have God's protective mark on their forehead. Whether the carcasses were real or symbolic, however, cleansing was coming, and God would accept his people again. The LORD Enters His Temple (1-12). The LORD came from the east toward the Temple. Previously (Ezekiel 10) he had left through the east gate when he forsook Solomon's Temple because of the sin of the people of Israel. Now he returned through the East Gate of the new Temple. His voice was like the sound of many waters (cf., Revelation 1:15), and the earth shone with his glory. After he entered, the Spirit brought Ezekiel into the temple where he saw the LORD's glory filling the Temple. And the LORD told Ezekiel that he would dwell there forever, and his people would no longer defile his holy name as they had in the past with their abominations. So the LORD told Ezekiel to tell the people about the Temple, its measurements and its laws because the whole territory of the Temple would be holy (literally, "a holy of holies"). The Measurements of the Altar of Burnt Offering (13-17). The LORD then described the measurements of the Altar of Burnt offering and noted that its steps should face east. The Consecration of the Altar of Burnt Offering (18-27). Then the LORD described how the Altar of Burnt Offering was to be consecrated for service. First, the Levitical priests of the family of Zadok, because of their faithfulness when the priests of the family of Abiathar were unfaithful (1 Kings 2:35; 1 Chronicles 24:3; Ezekiel 40:46; Ezekiel 44:15-31), were to officiate. Various offerings were to be given over the course of seven days to cleanse and consecrate the Altar. In verse 26, the Hebrew says, "and they cleanse him and they fill his hand" (or "hands," as the margin says). This personifies the altar, speaking as if the altar had a hand or hands which were filled when it received the sacrifices. The counterpart to this is the priests, who were already consecrated, and whose hands were also filled with the sacrifices before they transferred them to the altar (Exodus 29:24; Leviticus 8:27; Leviticus 9:17). Afterward, from that time on, the LORD would accept the burnt offerings and the peace offerings which were sacrificed upon it. [ Sermons: Dennis Prutow 1. Dennis Prutow 2. James Philip.
