Likewise, in today's chapter, the Jews walked in procession atop Jerusalem's wall as part of the dedication of the completed wall. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Nehemiah 12 lists the priests and Levites who returned from the Babylonian Captivity, describes the activities of those who participated in the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, and gives various details about the officers who were appointed for the service of the Temple. As part of their activities, the Jews ascended to the top of the city wall and walked in procession upon it. The chapter begins with a list of the chief priests and their brethren who went to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel (1-7). A listing is then given of Levites and priests who also came to Jerusalem (8-21). The narrative then turns to a description of the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, which was done with singing, rejoicing, purification rituals, and sacrifices (22-43). Afterward, Nehemiah appointed officers to care for the temple and its services (44-47). NOTE: Nehemiah (served 445-425 B.C.) was contemporary with the following Biblical persons: Joel (580-450 B.C. -- if this late date applies, rather than a date in the 9th century B.C.); Haggai (520 B.C.); Zechariah (520-518 B.C.); Esther (483-473 B.C.); Ezra (538-456 B.C.). However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
