I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Nehemiah 13 describes the reforms which were made to bring the people and their leaders into conformity with the Law. Exile of lawbreakers was one of the reforms used by Nehemiah. When the Law was read to the Israelites they learned that Ammonites and Moabites were not allowed to become members of the congregation of God. This was because they hired Balaam to try to bring a curse upon Israel. This reading of the Law seems to have happened on the day when the walls of Jerusalem were dedicated (see the previous chapter). This interpretation is disputed by various scholars; but the nearest antecedents for the words "that day" and "they" in this chapter are in the previous chapter. Whatever the case, when the Israelites heard the requirements of the law, they removed the Ammonites and Moabites from among them (1-3). And another problem had to be corrected. Eliashib the priest became an ally of Tobiah and allowed him to live in a large chamber in the Temple. When Nehemiah, who had gone back to the Persian court for a time, returned to Jerusalem, he removed Tobiah from the Temple and restored Tobiah's quarters to their former purpose of storing sacrificial items (4-9). Nehemiah also arranged to have the allotments for the Levites and the singers restored to them (10-14). Nehemiah also made various people stop violating the Sabbath by commercial ventures and by working (15-18). He also drove merchants away from outside the walls of Jerusalem and commanded the Levites to cleanse themselves, to keep the gates, and to keep the Sabbaths. And he asked God to remember him for good for these things (19-22). In those days, Nehemiah contended with those Jews who had contracted heathen marriages and warned them about the disastrous results that even Solomon had experienced by such marriages (23-27). Nehemiah also exiled Joiada, the priest, because he had married the daughter of Sanballat the Horonite, thereby defiling the priesthood. He asked God to remember him for good for this act (28-29). For these acts of cleansing, bringing order to the priests and Levites, and normalizing the offerings, Nehemiah asked God to remember him (30-31). NOTE: Nehemiah (served 445-425 B.C.) was contemporary with the following Biblical persons: Joel (580-450 B.C. -- if this late date applies, rather than a date in the 9th century B.C.); Haggai (520 B.C.); Zechariah (520-518 B.C.); Esther (483-473 B.C.); Ezra (538-456 B.C.). However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
