I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Ezra 8 records the journey of Ezra and his companions to Jerusalem. Ezra begins the chapter with a list of the main rulers who went with him to Jerusalem (1-14). They stopped at a staging area near the river of Ahava. And, when Ezra found that no one had come from among the Levites, he sent a delegation to fetch them (15-20). At the river of Ahava they fasted and asked God for help and protection on the journey because they had declined the protection of Artaxerxes I Longimanus (465-424 B.C.). And God granted their request (21-23). Ezra then appointed the priests and Levites as treasurers and gave them the money and the vessels which the king had given (24-30). When they arrived in Jerusalem they gave the money and the vessels to Meremoth (31-34). They then offered burnt offerings and sin offerings to the LORD; and they delivered the king's commission to the rulers of the land (35-36). NOTE: Ezra (538-456 B.C.) was contemporary with the following Biblical persons: Joel (580-450 B.C. -- if this late date applies, rather than a date in the 9th century B.C.); Haggai (520 B.C.); Zechariah (520-518 B.C.); Esther (483-473 B.C.); Nehemiah (445-425 B.C.). However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
