I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Ezra 7 records the decree of Artaxerxes I (c. 458 B.C.) to send Ezra to Jerusalem with a band of immigrants. Artaxerxes I Longimanus (465-424 B.C.) made a decree (c. 458 B.C.) to send Ezra from Babylon to Jerusalem. This decree would have been issued about 58 years after the dedication of the temple in 516 B.C., as mentioned in the previous chapter. By this time, Zerubbabel and those who came with him to begin the work may have died (1-6). With Ezra went many officials, priests, Levites, and various Temple servants (7-10). Artaxerxes gave a letter to Ezra stating that all who wanted to go with him should go of their own free will. And he commissioned Ezra to take gold and silver to buy offerings and other needed items; further, he commissioned him to receive additional help from the Babylonian treasury, as Ezra deemed necessary (11-20). Artaxerxes also commanded the treasurers in the land of Israel to provide help to Ezra as he required. And he forbade the rulers of the land to impose fees on them (21-24). In addition, he commanded Ezra to teach the laws of God to the inhabitants of Israel. And he warned any who opposed Ezra that they would face various punishments ranging from death to lesser penalties (25-26). The chapter closes with Ezra's praise to the LORD for putting such things into the heart of Artaxerxes. And he notes that God's hand was upon him to strengthen him as he gathered some of the chief men of Israel to go with him to Jerusalem (27-28). NOTE: Ezra (538-456 B.C.) was contemporary with the following Biblical persons: Joel (580-450 B.C. -- if this late date applies, rather than a date in the 9th century B.C.); Haggai (520 B.C.); Zechariah (520-518 B.C.); Esther (483-473 B.C.); Nehemiah (445-425 B.C.). However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
