[Traditional Patriarchal Timeline. Judges. Judges Period Chronology. Kings of Judah and Israel #1. Kings of Judah and Israel #2]. Jehoahaz (608 B.C.), the son of Josiah (640-608 B.C.), became King of Judah after his father's death. He was 23 when he began his reign; and he reigned for only three months. The King of Egypt deposed him and put the realm to tribute. And he made his brother, Eliakim, king; and he changed Eliakim's name to Jehoiakim. He then took Jehoahaz to Egypt (1-4). Jehoiakim/Eliakim (608-597 B.C.) was twenty five when he began to reign; and he reigned for 11 years. He was evil; and Nebuchadnezzar captured him and took him to Babylon. He also took the vessels from the Temple and put them in his Temple in Babylon. The rest of Jehoiakim/Eliakim's acts are written in his court records (5-8). Jehoiachin (597 B.C.), the son of Jehoiakim/Eliakim, took the throne after his father was deported. He reigned for three months and ten days. He was evil. And Nebuchadnezzar took him to Babylon together with the vessels from the Temple. And he made Zedekiah, his brother, king (9-10). Zedekiah (597-586 B.C.) was 21 when he came to the throne; and he reigned for 11 years. He was evil; and he refused to listen to Jeremiah. He rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar. And the priests and the people rebelled against the LORD by practicing idolatry (11-14). In his compassion, the LORD sent messengers to them; but they mocked and misused them; and the wrath of the LORD came upon them, until there was no remedy (15-16). And the LORD brought the Chaldeans upon them. And they killed men, women, and children and broke down the Temple. And they looted Jerusalem and the Temple and took many captives to Babylon. And the land lay desolate for 70 years and had its sabbaths during that time (17-21). When the seventy years were up, Cyrus the Great (559-530 B.C.), king of Persia, made a decree to send all who were willing back to Jerusalem and Judah to rebuild the Temple. This decree is also found at the beginning of the book of Ezra; and it links the two books (22-23). The kings mentioned in this chapter were contemporary with Jeremiah (627-560 B.C.), Habakkuk (609 B.C.), Daniel (606-530 B.C.), Ezekiel (593-570 B.C.), and Obadiah (587 B.C.). I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
