Cyrus Restores the Vessels of the Temple (jpg) - (c. 1865) Gustav Dore (1832-1883) Romanticism Style Dore's English Bible (1866) Image Source: King James Bible Online [ Illustration: Today's image depicts a key event in today's chapter, the decree of Cyrus to send back the temple vessels to the restored temple in Jerusalem. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Ezra 1 contains the decree of Cyrus to build the Temple in Jerusalem and the initial response of those who went there to begin the work. God fulfilled a prophecy of Jeremiah by stirring up the spirit of Cyrus, King of Persia, who issued a decree to build a Temple to the LORD in Jerusalem (1). In the decree, Cyrus acknowledged that God had commanded him to build a Temple for the LORD in Jerusalem in the land of Judah. And he also commanded others to give the builders material help and freewill offerings to facilitate the task (2-4). Many officials from Judah and Benjamin, together with priests and Levites, answered the call. Many helped them materially. And Cyrus also sent back the vessels of the temple which Nebuchadnezzar had taken and placed in the temple of his gods. Cyrus gave them to Mithredath, his treasurer; and Mithredath gave them unto Sheshbazzar (possibly Nehemiah), the prince of Judah, who brought them to Jerusalem (5-11). NOTE: Ezra (538-456 B.C.) was contemporary with the following Biblical persons: Joel (580-450 B.C. -- if this late date applies, rather than a date in the 9th century B.C.); Haggai (520 B.C.); Zechariah (520-518 B.C.); Esther (483-473 B.C.); Nehemiah (445-425 B.C.). However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
