Christ Meeting the Wife and the Sons of Zebedee, (c. 1565)

Explanation: When James and John, the sons of Zebedee came with their mother to Jesus asking that they might be given high positions in the kingdom which Jesus was setting up, Jesus rebuked them for this attitude and told them that advancement comes from service, not from mere appointment. This was another version of his saying that the first shall be last and the last shall be first, as he had recently told the rich young ruler and Peter and the rest of the disciples.

Matthew 20:20-28; Mark 10:35-45
Matthew 20:20-28; Mark 10:35-45 Matthew 20:20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, [Mark 10:35 James and John,] worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. [Mark 10:35 saying, Master, we would that you should do for us whatsoever we shall desire.]
Matthew 20:21 And he said unto her, [Mark 10:36 (and) unto them,] What would you that I should do for you?
Matthew 20:21 She [Mark 10:37 (and) they] said unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on your right hand, and the other on the left, in your kingdom, [Mark 10:37 in your glory.]
Matthew 20:22 But Jesus answered and said, [Mark 10:38 (to her and) unto them,] You know not what you ask. Are you able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
Mark 10:39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, You shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall you be baptized:
Matthew 20:23 but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
Matthew 20:24 And when the ten heard it, [Mark 10:41 they began to be much displeased] (and) they were moved with indignation against the two brethren [Mark 10:41 James and John.]
Mark 10:42 But Jesus called them to him, and said unto them, You know that [Matthew 20:25 the princes] which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship [Matthew 20:25 (and) dominion] over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
Matthew 20:26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
Matthew 20:27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
