Ezekiel 24
Island of the Dead -- Version 3 (1883) Arnold Bocklin (1827-1901) Symbolist Style Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany Image Source: Wikimedia [ Illustration: The painting above illustrates mourning in the more usual way of mourning - - with solemnity, ceremony, and personal attendance. These means would be denied to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: On January 15, 588 B.C., as recorded in Ezekiel 24, the king of Babylon began a two year siege against Jerusalem (1-2). As in Ezekiel 11, the LORD compares the inhabitants of the city to flesh in a pot. But they would not merely seethe in the pot; they would be consumed. He gives the command, "Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned" (24:10, KJV). Their impurities will be destroyed (3-14). The emotional impact of the destruction which was coming upon them would be so great, the anguish and shock so deep, that they would not be able to mourn for their lost-loved ones in the normal manner. This is symbolized by the death of Ezekiel's wife, and the LORD's requirement upon the prophet that he not mourn for her in the usual way. He groaned quietly with no outward demonstration of mourning, and the LORD caused him to be dumbstruck among the Jews for about 18 months (Ezekiel 33:21) until Jerusalem fell. However, in chapters 25-32, the LORD commanded him to speak to various nations, so his inability to speak may have been limited to his own countrymen. Either that, or his "speaking" to foreign nations was in written form only (15-27). [ Sermons: G I Williamson. Dennis Prutow. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL. Tell the Cooking Pot Allegory (24:3-14) Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it: 4 Gather the pieces thereof into it, even every good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones. 5 Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein. 6 Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it. 7 For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust; 8 That it might cause fury to come up to take vengeance; I have set [this] her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered. 9 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great. 10 Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well [and compound the seasonning], and let the bones be burned. 11 Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed. 12 She hath wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire. 13 In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused [this] my fury to rest upon thee. 14 I the LORD have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord GOD. 4).
