I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Jeremiah 52 describes the destruction of Jerusalem and the capture of king Zedekiah, around 586 B.C., by Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, with a historical vignette some years later concerning Zedekiah's predecessor, king Jehoiachin (see also 2 Kings 25; 2 Chronicles 36:11-21; and Jeremiah 39:1-14). This chapter may have been written by Ezra. The chapter opens with historical notes about Zedekiah, his pedigree, and his rebellion against Nebuchadrezzar (1-3). For Zedekiah's rebellion, Nebuchadrezzar laid siege to Jerusalem until the inhabitants were starving (4-6). At that point, the city was broken up, and Zedekiah and his warriors fled by night (7). But the Chaldean army captured them and took them to Riblah (about 225 miles north of Jerusalem) in the land of Hamath where Nebuchadrezzar killed Zedekiah's sons before his eyes, put out Zedekiah's eyes, and put him in prison in Babylon till the day he died (8-11). Meanwhile, Nebuzaradan, captain of Nebuchadrezzar's guard, entered Jerusalem and burned the Temple along with the houses of the people and of the great men of the city (12-13). They also broke down the walls of Jerusalem and carried away many captives, leaving only a few to be vinedressers and farmers - or "ploughmen" (14-16). They also took the treasures of the Temple, the king's house, and the other houses in Jerusalem (17-23). They then took the chief priest and a number of other officials to Riblah where Nebuchadrezzar executed them (24-27). In all, 4,600 persons were sent to exile in Babylon (28-30). Many years later, when Evilmerodach was king of Babylon, he brought Zedekiah's predecessor, Jehoiachin, out of prison and gave him a place of honor in his court until the day he died, a striking contrast to Zedekiah's fate, who lived in prison till the day he died (31-34).
