I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: In Jeremiah 19, after the LORD gave Jeremiah the lesson of the potter, showing him his absolute power over the nations, he told Jeremiah to take a potter's earthen bottle and go with the ancients of the people and the ancients of the priests to the valley of the son of Hinnom, also called Tophet (1-2). In that place the LORD told him to warn them that he would bring such evil upon them that "whosoever hears, his ears shall tingle" (3). The LORD said that the evil was coming because they forsook him, they estranged the place (by polluting it), they burned incense to other gods, they filled the place with innocent blood, they built altars to Baal, and they sacrificed their sons to Baal -- none of which the LORD commanded, nor did it come to his mind (4-5). Therefore, said the LORD, after his judgments came upon them, the name of the valley would be changed from Tophet and Hinnom to the Valley of Slaughter (6). Moreover, he would make void the counsel of the rulers, and give them over to death, and make the city desolate, and cause them to become cannibals of their own children (7-9). After Jeremiah delivered this message, the LORD told him to break the bottle and tell the people that they, like the bottle, would be irreparably broken; and they would be buried in Tophet till there was no place left for burial; and the city of Jerusalem will be similarly defiled because they have worshipped the hosts of heaven (10-13). Then Jeremiah came from Tophet into the court of the Temple and warned the people that the LORD was going to bring all the evil he pronounced against them because they hardened their necks and would not listen to him (14-15). I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
