Isaiah 66
Man with Delusions of Military Command (1819-1822) Theodore Gericault (1791-1824) Romanticism Style Private Collection Image Source: Web Gallery of Art [ Illustration: Today's painting symbolizes the delusions spoken of in verse 4, below. The word is translated "delusions" or some variant of that word in several different versions. It can be translated in several different ways; but sin always involves some measure of delusion, so I have illustrated that concept. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Isaiah 66 opens with an assertion from the LORD that he does not need a house to dwell in; rather his interest is in those who are poor and contrite of spirit and who tremble at his word (1-2). But for those who misuse the offerings and delight in abominations, he will send delusions (as above) and bring their fears upon them because they refused to listen and did evil (3-4). By contrast, his message to those who tremble at his word is that shame will come upon those who hate them and cast them out; but joy will come to the obedient (5). Having said these things, the voice of the LORD who judges his enemies, comes from the Temple within the city (Jerusalem) announcing the quick and painless birth of a nation in a day (6-9). All who love Jerusalem are invited to partake in its consolations and its glory (10-11). For the LORD will give her peace; the glory of the Gentiles will be hers; she will be comforted; and rejoicing and prosperity will follow together with judgment on the Gentiles (12-14). The LORD will come in judgment and slay many, including those who engage in idolatrous practices (15-17). Israel will bear witness to the LORD among the Gentiles; and some of them will become priests and Levites (18-21). Israel will endure before the LORD, just as the new heavens and the new earth will endure; all flesh will come and worship before the LORD; and the carcasses of those who have transgressed against the LORD will be eaten by the undying worm and burned in the unquenchable fire; and they will be abhorrent to all people (22-24). I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL. (These 8 groups of prophecies alternate between blessings on Israel and judgment on God's enemies.) H. Cycle 8 (63:7 - 66:24) 1. Blessing On Israel (63:7 - 66:14) b. The Lord's Answer (Continued) (65:1 - 66:14) 3). The Nation Will be Reborn (66:1-14) 1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool [stool of my feet]: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? 2 For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. 3 He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck [he beheaded a dog]; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. 4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. 5 Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed. 6 A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies. 7 Before she travailed, she bought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child. 8 Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once [one stroke]? for as soon as Zion travailed, she bought forth [this] her children. 9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God. 10 Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her: 11 That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory. 12 For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees. 13 As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. 14 And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies. 2. Judgment On the Nations by Everlasting Destruction (66:15-24) 15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. 16 For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many. 22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. 23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another [to a Sabbath], shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
