SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

     Explanation: Isaiah 53 is one of the most famous passages in Scripture and probably the most famous passage in the prophets. It describes the Messiah (Christ), particularly his sufferings and his atonement for sin. He was heard with disbelief, received with disinterest, and was despised (1-3).
     And although he bears our griefs and carries our sorrows, yet we esteem him to be smitten by God; and though he bears our wounds, our iniquities, and our chastisement and brings us healing, yet we go astray, going our own way, even though the LORD lays our iniquity upon him (4-6).
     He was quiet before his tormentors and his judges; and he made his grave with the wicked and with the rich (7-9).
     But the LORD accepts his sin-bearing; and many are justified through him (10-12).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

1. Blessing: On Zion and Foreign Converts by the Redeemer (52:1 - 56:8)

a. Blessing of Redemption Through the Suffering Messiah (Continued) (52:1 - 53:12)

1 Who hath believed our report?
and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
2 For he shall grow up before him
as a tender plant,
and as a root out of a dry ground:
he hath no form nor comeliness;
and when we shall see him,
there is no beauty
that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men;
a man of sorrows,
and acquainted with grief:
and we hid as it were our faces from him;
he was despised,
and we esteemed him not.

7 He was oppressed,
and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth:
he is bought as a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb,
so he openeth not his mouth.
8 He was taken from prison
and from judgment:
and who shall declare his generation?
for he was cut off
out of the land of the living:
for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death;
because he had done no violence,
neither was any deceit in his mouth.
