SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: In Isaiah 6, Isaiah sees the LORD in his holiness. Believing he is undone, he cries out in despair saying, "I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." By uttering this cry he identifies himself and the people with king Uzziah (Azariah) who, during the latter part of his life, was required to separate himself from everyone because of his leprosy (Leviticus 13:46; Numbers 5:2; Numbers 12:14) and had to cover his lips and cry, "unclean, unclean" when anyone approached (Leviticus 13:45). But Isaiah was delivered from his uncleanness by the thrice holy God. And it was this holy God who, in the previous chapter, proclaimed judgment upon his vineyard. In today's chapter, God commissions Isaiah to proclaim the same message of judgment.

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

The LORD Commissions Isaiah to Proclaim Judgment (6:1-13)

1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above [From above] it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings [six wings six wings]; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one cried unto another, and said,

Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts:
the whole earth is full of his glory.

4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house filled with smoke. 5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
8 Also I heard [this] the voice of the Lord, saying [this], Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
9 And he said, Go, and tell this people,

Hear ye indeed, [Hearing ye you hear],
but understand not;
and see ye indeed [seeing you see],
but perceive not.
10 Make the heart of this people fat,
and make their ears heavy,
and shut their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes,
and hear with their ears,
and understand with their heart,
and convert,
and be healed.
11 Then said I,
Lord, how long [until when]?
And he answered,
Until [Until after] the cities be wasted without [with nothing of] inhabitant,
and the houses without [with nothing of] man,
and the land be utterly desolate,
12 And the LORD have removed [this] men far away,
and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.
13 But yet in it shall be a tenth,
and it shall return,
and shall be eaten:
as a teil tree,
and as an oak,
whose substance is in them,
when they cast their leaves:
so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.
