I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Proverbs 22 contains comparisons and contrasts between the righteous and the wicked. Some of the proverbs in the latter part of the chapter extend to two or more verses. A major sub-section ("The Words/Sayings of the Wise"), in the first division of Proverbs (chapters 21-24), begins in verse 17 of this chapter and extends to the end of chapter twenty-four. The subjects of chapter 22 are these: A good name is better than great riches; and loving favor is better than silver and gold (1). The rich and the poor mingle together; the LORD made them both (2). A prudent person sees danger and avoids it, but the simple go on and suffer (3). The reward for humility and the fear of the LORD is riches, honor, and life (4). Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked; the one who guards his soul will keep far from them (5). Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it (6). The rich rules the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender (7). Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his fury will fail (8). The bountiful person will be blessed, because he shares his bread with the poor (9). Drive out a scoffer, and strife, quarreling, and abuse will cease (10). He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend (11). The eyes of the LORD guard knowledge, and he overthrows the words of the transgressor (12). The slothful man says, "A lion is outside! I shall be killed in the streets!" In other words, they make ridiculous excuses to avoid work (13). The mouth of a strange women is a deep pit; he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall into it (14). Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him (15). Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty (16). Bow down your ear to hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart unto knowledge (17). It will be pleasant if you keep wisdom and knowledge within you, if you have them ready on your lips (18). So that you may trust in the LORD, wisdom and knowledge are available to you today (19). The Proverb writer wrote excellent things of counsel and knowledge (20). The purpose was to make known to the reader what was right and true, and to give a true answer to the one who sent him for instruction (21). Do not rob the poor, because he is poor, or crush the afflicted in the gate (22). The LORD will plead the cause of the poor and the afflicted; and he will plunder the life of those who plunder them (23). Make no friendship with a man who is given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man (24). Otherwise you may learn his ways and entangle yourself with a snare (25). Do not be one of those who gives pledges or who puts up security for debts (26). If you have nothing to pay, your bed may be taken from under you (27). Do not remove the ancient landmark that your fathers have set (28). Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings, not before obscure men (29). [ Sermons: Eric Davis. Section 1 - Proverbs of Solomon (1:1 - 22:16) 1). Sub-Section 1 - "The Proverbs of Solomon, Son of David" (1:1 - 9:18) a). Purpose: To teach the fear of the LORD, the beginning of wisdom (1:1-7, esp. 7) b). Precepts: The seductions of folly verses the attractions of wisdom (1:8 - 9:18) (1). Part 1: (1:8 - 4:27) (a). Folly: Wicked Companions Bring Death (1:8-19) (b). Wisdom: Wisdom Brings Life and reward (1:20 - 4:27) (2). Part 2: (5:1 - 6:19) (a). Folly: Adulterous Women Bring Suffering and Death (5:1-15) (b). Wisdom: Safety from Marital Love + Diligence in Wisdom (5:16 - 6:19) (3). Part 3: (6:20 - 9:18) (a). Folly: Adulterous Women Bring Deceit & Death (6:20 - 7:27) (b). Wisdom: It Brings Favor from the LORD, Kings, & Rulers (8:1 - 9:18) 2). Sub-Section 2 - "The Proverbs of Solomon" (10:1 - 22:16) Note: This section builds on the previous section by offering a series of contrasts between the wise and the foolish and between wisdom and folly in general. Having offered a strong persuasion in the previous section to follow wisdom, the author now shows what wisdom is in daily life. In the latter sections the proverbs are generally arranged individually, and groupings are less frequent and mainly shorter. B. Section 2 - Sayings of the Wise: ["Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise"] - (22:17 - 24:34) Note: If Ecclesiastes 12:9 refers to Solomon, this collection may be one of those which he "searched out and arranged." (See also 1 Kings 4:32). The same is true for the last group of proverbs (30:1 - 33:31). 1). Sub-Section 1 - "The Sayings of the Wise" (22:17 - 24:22) 2). Sub-Section 2 - "These Also are the Sayings of the Wise" (24:23 - 24:34) Proverbs 22 Map 1: Bible Nations | Map 2: Empire of David and Solomon Map 3: Kingdoms of Judah and Israel | Post Exile Chronology. 1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. 2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all. 3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished. 4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life. 5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them. 6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. 7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender [to a man giving]. 8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail. 9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. 10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease. 11 He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend. 12 The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor. 13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets. 14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein. 15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. 16 He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want. 1). Sub-Section 1 - "The Sayings of the Wise" (22:17 - 24:22) 17 Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. 18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips. 19 That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. 20 Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, 21 That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee? 22 Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: 23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them. 24 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: 25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul. 26 Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. 27 If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee? 28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. 29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
