Psalm 111
Allegory of Gdansk Trade (1608) Izaak van den Blocke (1574-1626) Northern Mannerism Style Main Town Hall, Gdansk, Poland Image Source: Wikimedia [ Illustration: Today's painting depicts the apotheosis of a city (Gdansk) -- a city raised to its supreme height. In similar fashion, today's Psalm reveals that the LORD brings his people to their highest point of development -- ruling over the nations, being redeemed, partaking of an everlasting covenant, filled with wisdom. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: In Psalm 111, the Psalmist exalts the works of the LORD. The Psalmist says that he will praise God with his whole heart among God's people (1). The rest of the Psalm tells us why he offers his praise to the LORD. The LORD's works are great; all who have pleasure in them seek them out (2). His works are honorable and glorious; and his righteousness endures forever (3). He has made his works to be remembered; he is gracious and filled with compassion (4). He gives food to all who fear him; he will always be mindful of his covenant (5). He has shown his power to his people; he will give his people the heritage of the heathen (6). His works are true and just; his commandments are sure -- they stand forever; and they are done in truth and uprightness (7-8). He redeemed his people; he commanded his covenant forever; his name is holy and revered (9). The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. All who do his commandments have good understanding. His praise endures forever (10). [ Sermons: J Ligon Duncan III. Various. ] Bible Chronologies -- Genesis to Revelation [Traditional Patriarchal Chronology. Judges Period Chronology 1. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL. [Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms. Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth"). It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments"). I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
