SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

     Explanation: In Psalm 75, the Psalmist thanks God for his justice and warns the wicked of an outpouring of wrath which will overwhelm all the inhabitants of the earth like drunkards overcome with wine.
     The Psalmist thanks God for his wondrous works, his judgments, and his sustaining power over the earth (1-3).
     He warned fools not to be foolish; and he warned the wicked not to boast of their power ("horn") and not to be stiffnecked (4).
     He told them that promotion comes from nowhere but from God, the judge, who puts down one and sets up another. He speaks to them of the cup of God's wrath which they will drink to the dregs (5-8).
     But he pledges to sing God's praises forever; and God pledges to cut off the horns (power) of the wicked and to exalt the horns of the righteous (9-10).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

Psalm Detailed Outline

THE PSALTER:

(SONGS FOR COVENANT WORSHIP)
Deliverance from Sinners and from Sin

Nearly all the Psalms (except Psalm 90) were written during the 612 year period
from the time of David around 1016 B. C. to the close of the Canon in about 404 B. C.
Psalm 90, according to its superscription, was written by Moses; this may have been around 1406 B. C.

Psalm 75
God judges uprightly.

1 To the chief Musician, [Transposed To Psalm 74 ] *

Unto thee, O God,
do we give thanks,
unto thee do we give thanks:
for that thy name is near
thy wondrous works declare.
2 When I shall receive the congregation
I will judge uprightly.
3 The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved:
I bear up the pillars of it.
Selah.

4 I said unto the fools,
Deal not foolishly:
and to the wicked,
Lift not up the horn:

5 Lift not up your horn on high:
speak not with a stiff neck.
6 For promotion cometh
neither from the east,
nor from the west,
nor from the south.
7 But God is the judge:
he putteth down one,
and setteth up another.
8 For in the hand of the LORD
there is a cup,
and the
wine is red;
it is full of mixture;
and he poureth out of the same:
but the dregs thereof,
all the wicked of the earth
shall wring them out,
and drink them.

9 But I will declare for ever;
I will sing praises
to the God of Jacob.
10 All the horns of the wicked
also will I cut off;
but the horns of the righteous
shall be exalted.

1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, [Transposed From Psalm 76:1 ] *

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
