Signing the Mayflower Compact 1620 (1899) Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863-1930) Academic Classicism Style of the American Renaissance Private Collection Image Source: Wikipedia [ Illustration: Like the Mayflower Compact depicted in today's painting, the covenant mentioned in today's chapter was a type of Social Contract. ] SPECIAL NOTE: [ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Nehemiah 10 lists the names of those who made the covenant mentioned in the previous chapter; and it gives the terms of that covenant. The chapter opens with a list of those who signed the covenant mentioned in the previous chapter (1-27). The covenanters agreed to separate themselves from the heathen, to observe the commandments of the LORD, to refrain from intermarriage with the heathen, to refrain from buying or selling on Sabbaths and holy days, and to observe the forgiveness of debts on the Sabbatical (or seventh) Year (28-31). They also agreed to contribute finances and gifts to the service of the Temple. Among the things pledged was a "wood offering." This seems to refer to the wood which was used in the altars of the Temple. This wood had been provided in years past by the Nethinims; but few of them returned from exile, so this duty had to be shared with others in the nation of Israel (32-39). NOTE: Nehemiah (served 445-425 B.C.) was contemporary with the following Biblical persons: Joel (580-450 B.C. -- if this late date applies, rather than a date in the 9th century B.C.); Haggai (520 B.C.); Zechariah (520-518 B.C.); Esther (483-473 B.C.); Ezra (538-456 B.C.). However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
