I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]
[Traditional Patriarchal Timeline. Judges. Judges Period Chronology. Kings of Judah and Israel #1. Kings of Judah and Israel #2]. The chapter begins with the ascension of Joash/Jehoash (835-796 B.C.) to the throne and ends with the death of Athaliah (841-835 B.C.) who had usurped his throne. The account is closely parallel to 2 Kings 11:4-21, which is discussed and illustrated in a previous DAWN page. The High Priest Jehoiada made a covenant with military officials, priests, Levites, and tribal leaders to bring Joash/Jehoash out of hiding and make him king in place of the usurper, Athaliah (1-7). They then surrounded Joash/Jehoash with an armed guard, crowned him, and made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him (8-11). When Athaliah discovered this she cried, "Treason, Treason;" but she was taken out and executed (12-15). And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, the people, and the king, to be the LORD's people. The people responded by tearing down the hose of Baal and killing Mattan, the priest of Baal. Jehoiada restored the proper worship of the LORD; and the land rejoiced (16-21). [ Sermons: Steve Cole. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
