[Traditional Patriarchal Timeline. Judges. Judges Period Chronology. Kings of Judah and Israel #1. Kings of Judah and Israel #2]. After Rehoboam established himself in the newly formed Kingdom of Judah (the Southern Kingdom), he and the people of Israel forsook the law of the LORD. The previous chapter (2 Chronicles 11:17) notes that Rehoboam and his people served the LORD for the first three years of his reign and then lapsed into disobedience. After two years of this disobedience, in Rehoboam's fifth year, Shishak king of Egypt came against Rehoboam. (Previously, Shishak had given aid and shelter to Jeroboam, Rehoboam's opponent and rival king -- 1 Kings 11:40). Shishak came with massive forces and with three allies: the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians. At that time Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and informed him that the LORD had left them in the hand of Shishak. But Rehoboam and the leaders of the people humbled themselves before the LORD; and the LORD told Shemaiah that he would not destroy them, and he would deliver Jerusalem, but they would become servants of Shishak (1-8). So Shishak took treasures from the Temple and from Rehoboam's house; and Rehoboam replaced some of the gold items of the Temple with bronze items. Subsequently, things went well with Rehoboam and with Judah (9-12). Rehoboam reigned for seventeen years; and his mother's name was Naamah an Ammonitess. The lapse into evil which he experienced and for which he was disciplined came about because he did not prepare his heart to seek the LORD (13-14). The history of Rehoboam was written in the books of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer. When Rehoboam died he was buried in the city of David, which was Jerusalem's main fortified part, and Abijah his son succeeded him (15-16). [ Sermons: Dennis Prutow. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
