I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]
[Traditional Patriarchal Timeline. Judges. Judges Period Chronology. Kings of Judah and Israel #1. Kings of Judah and Israel #2]. Rehoboam, son of Solomon, went to Shechem where all of Israel had come to make him king. Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of the pending inauguration and came from Egypt where he had fled for his life from Solomon. The events leading up to this moment are described in 1 Kings 11. Briefly stated, Solomon mingled idolatry with his worship of the LORD because of the influence of his foreign wives. He forsook the LORD in part ("his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God; he "went not fully after the LORD" -- 1 Kings 11:4, 6). Also, apparently, Solomon continued to make regular sacrifices to the LORD throughout his life and to observe the feasts of the LORD (2 Chronicles 8:12-13). This, apparently, was not complete apostasy; but it was a lapse into the kind of mixed worship (of the LORD with other gods) that Israel had indulged in from the time of the Exodus. The fundamental relationship (father and son) between Solomon and the LORD remained (2 Samuel 7:14-15; 1 Chronicles 17:13-14; 1 Chronicles 28:6), as the LORD had promised (1-2). The people of Israel called on Jeroboam to represent them before king Rehoboam. They asked Rehoboam for a measure of relief from the rigorous servitude which Solomon had imposed upon them. Rehoboam told them to return for his answer in three days (3-5). Rehoboam sought the counsel of the old men who had served under his father, Solomon. They advised him to speak kindly to the people and grant them relief. He then sought the counsel of the younger men. They advised Rehoboam to speak harshly to the petitioners. They told him to tell them that his little finger would be thicker than his father's thighs, that his yoke would be heavier than his father's, and that his father had chastised them with whips, but he would chastise them with scorpions (6-11). So Rehoboam spoke roughly to the people, because the thing was from God that he might fulfill his prophecy through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat that he would become king of the ten Northern Tribes (12-15). When Israel heard this answer from Rehoboam they told the king that they no longer had a portion in David; and they departed to their tents. But the tribe of Judah (and Benjamin) remained loyal to Rehoboam. Rehoboam then sent Hadoram to collect tribute money; and the Israelites stoned him. Therefore, Rehoboam fled to Jerusalem; and the rebellion of Israel against the house of David was permanent (16-19). [ Sermons: Steve Cole. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
