SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: 1 Chronicles 18 tells of several wars which David won. The chapter also mentions an alliance he made; and it gives a brief list of some of the key officers in David's kingdom. David achieved significant military control over the region. In Damascus of Syria and Edom, for example, David put garrisons. Traditional Patriarchal Timeline. Judges. Judges Period Chronology. Kings of Judah and Israel #1. Kings of Judah and Israel #2].
After David took the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and placed it in the Tabernacle, he had war with the Philistines. He took Gath, one of the royal cities, and its associated towns (1).
He also defeated the Moabites and made them tributaries (2).
In addition, he defeated Hadarezer king of Zobah and took gold and bronze from some of his cities and brought it to Jerusalem. And when the Syrians came to their aid, he defeated the Syrians and put garrisons in Syriadamascus and made them tributaries (3-8).
The king of Hamath, Tou, sent his son Hadoram with many vessels made of gold, silver, and brass to congratulate David on his victory over the Syrians. David dedicated these things to the LORD plus the silver and gold which he got from Edom, Moab, Ammon, the Philistines, and Amalek (9-11).
Also, through his general Abishai, David defeated the Edomites, put garrisons in their territory, and made them tributaries (12-13).
So David ruled over all of Israel; Joab was over his army; Jehoshaphat was the recorder; Zadok and Abimelech were the main priests; Shavsha was scribe; Benaiah was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chiefs (14-17).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

1 Now after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of the Philistines.
2 And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became David's servants, and bought gifts.
3 And David smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates. 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen [foot men]: David also houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them an hundred chariots. 5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syriadamascus [in Syria of Damascus]; and the Syrians became David's servants, and bought gifts. Thus the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. 7 And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer, and bought them to Jerusalem. 8 Likewise from Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer, bought David very much brass, wherewith Solomon made the brasen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass.
9 Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah; 10 He sent Hadoram his son to king David, to enquire of his welfare, and to congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war [was a man of war] with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass. 11 Them also king David dedicated unto the LORD, with the silver and the gold that he bought from all these nations; from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.
12 Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah slew of the Edomites in the valley of salt eighteen thousand. 13 And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became David's servants. Thus the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
14 So David reigned over all Israel, and executed [he is doing] judgment and justice among all his people. 15 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, recorder. 16 And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Abimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Shavsha was scribe; 17 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief about the king.
