Explanation: In 1 John 5, John says that a person is born of God if he believes that Jesus is the Christ [the Messiah, the Anointed, the Saviour promised by God in the Law, the Psalms, and the Prophets]. We know that we love God's children if we love God and keep his commandments. To keep his commandments is to love him and to not be grieved by obedience. Anyone who is born of God overcomes the world; it is our faith that Jesus is the Son of God which overcomes the world (1-5).
Jesus came by water [the water of baptism which inaugurated his ministry] and blood [the blood of the cross which sealed his ministry]. The Holy Spirit, who is truth, bears witness. These three [the water, the blood, and the Spirit] agree in their testimony. [The words of verse 7 and the first part of verse 8 seem to have been added to the text in later manuscripts as an interpretation]. In verse 9, continuing his teaching, John says that if we receive the witness of men, the witness of God concerning his Son is greater. Also, those who believe on the Son of God, have a witness within themselves; but anyone who does not believe God's testimony concerning His Son has made him a liar. The testimony is that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life (6-12).
John wrote these things so that those who believe in the Son of God will know that they have eternal life. And we know that if we ask anything according to God's will, he hears us and will gives what we desire (13-15).
If anyone sees his brother sin a sin which is not unto death he should pray for him so that he may receive life. But he should not pray for someone who has committed a sin unto death. This sin goes by various designations in Scripture -- blaspheming the name of God, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, and so on. For related Scriptures see the links below under "THEMATICALLY AND CHRONOLOGICALLY RELATED SCRIPTURES." The context of these Scriptures shows that this sin is the sin of repudiating God when a person has clear and convincing evidence of God's truth and has been blessed by God with significant spiritual blessings. Judas is a clear example of such a person (16-17).
Anyone who is born of God does not continue to live in sin without struggling against it. He keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. (18).
We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in wickedness (19).
God's Son has come and has given us understanding that we may know him that is true. And we are in him who is true, Jesus Christ. "This is the true God, and eternal life." The word "this" could refer to God or to Jesus. But it seems to be a reference to the deity of Jesus Christ since he is the closest antecedent. Also, this interpretation is in accord with 1 John 1:2 which refers to Jesus Christ as the "eternal life" which was in the beginning with the Father. John closes by telling his readers to keep themselves from idols (20-21).

1 John 5

2. Practicing the Well-Founded Life (1 John 2:15 - 1 John 5:21) - 90 A.D. Israel

1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
