     Explanation: Proverbs 14 contains comparisons and contrasts between the righteous and the wicked. Many of these deal with the effects of these qualities on those who exhibit them. I have therefore chosen today's painting to represent the effects of the wisdom of the woman in the first verse, and, by extrapolation, other effects of righteousness in the lives of others.

     The subjects of chapter 14 are these: The wisdom of a wise woman builds her house; the foolishness of a foolish woman tears her house down (1). The upright fear the LORD; the perverse despise him (2). The mouth of proud fools is injurious, like a rod; the lips of the wise preserve them (3). Although oxen create dirt they bring profit (4). A faithful witness will not lie; but a false witness breathes out lies (5). Scorners seek wisdom but cannot find it; but knowledge is easy for those with discernment (6). Avoid a foolish man when you discover his folly (7). The wisdom of a prudent man helps him discern the way he should go; but the folly of fools deceives them (8). Fools mock at sin; but the righteous gain favor (9). Both the bitterness and the joy of a man's heart is understood best by himself; a stranger should not meddle with them (10). The dwelling of the wicked will be overthrown; but the dwelling of the upright will flourish (11). There is a way which seems right to a man, but the end thereof is the ways of death (12). [For some people] the heart is sorrowful in the midst of laughter, and grief comes at the end of mirth (13). Those who pull back from the LORD will be filled with their own ways; and a good man shall be satisfied from himself (14). The simple believe everything; but the prudent examine everything (15). The wise depart from evil; but the fool rages confidently (16). A fool is soon angry; a man of wicked devices is hated (17). The simple inherit folly; but the prudent are crowned with knowledge (18). The evil bow before the good; and the wicked bow at their gates (19). The poor is hated even by his neighbor; but the rich have many friends (20). He who despises his neighbor sins; but one who has mercy on the poor is happy (21). Those who devise evil err [reel, or sway]; but mercy and truth come to those who devise good (22). All labor is profitable; but talk only leads to poverty (23). Wisdom is a rich crown to the wise; but the foolishness of fools is folly (24). A true witnesses delivers people; but a deceitful witness speaks lies (25). The fear of the LORD is a place of confidence and of refuge for a man and his children (26). The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life and an escape from the snares of death (27). Having a multitude of subjects brings honor to the king; but having few followers brings about his destruction (28). Those who are slow to wrath have great understanding; those who have a hasty spirit exalt folly (29). A healed heart is life for the body; but envy is like rottenness in the bones (30). He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker; but he who honors the LORD has mercy on the poor (31). The wicked is driven away by his wickedness; but the righteous has hope [a refuge] in his death (32). Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding; but the inward part of fools is discovered (33). Righteousness exalts a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people (34). The king is favorable toward a wise servant but wrathful against a shameful one (35).

³ In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
⁴ Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
⁵ A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
⁶ A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.
⁷ Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.
⁸ The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.
⁹ Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.
¹⁰ The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy.
¹¹ The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.
¹² There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
¹³ Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.
¹⁴ The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from [out of] himself.
¹⁵ The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.
¹⁶ A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.
¹⁷ He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
¹⁸ The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
¹⁹ The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
²⁰ The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends.
²¹ He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.
²² Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.
²³ In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.
²⁴ The crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly.
²⁵ A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.
²⁶ In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
²⁷ The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
²⁸ In the multitude of people is the king's honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.
²⁹ He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.
³⁰ A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
³¹ He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor.
³² The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.
³³ Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.
