     Explanation: In Psalm 127 the Psalmist points out that if the LORD blesses an activity it will succeed; but it is vain otherwise. By comparing today's painting (and its inspiration in Matthew 19:14; Mark 10:14; and Luke 18:16) with the Psalm below we learn that, as the Lord builds the house of the faithful with children, so he builds his own house with children.

     The Psalmist informs us that we labor in vain to build our houses (and our households) unless the LORD builds the house; and, unless the LORD keeps our city, the watchman wakes in vain (1). Therefore it is vain for us to rise early, to sit up late, and to live in sorrow (2). Children are a heritage and a reward from the LORD (3). They are like arrows in the hand of a mighty man (4). Happy is the man who has a quiver full of them; he will not be ashamed when he confronts his enemies (5).

Psalm 127

1 Song of degrees for Solomon. *


Except the LORD build the house,
they labour in vain that build it:
except the LORD keep the city,
the watchman waketh but in vain.
2 It is vain for you to rise up early,
to sit up late,
to eat the bread of sorrows:
for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD:
and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man;
so are children of the youth.
5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:
they shall not be ashamed,
but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.


* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
