     Explanation: In Psalm 97 the Psalmist reminds his readers of God's spectacular self-revelation at Sinai. Today's image has several parallels to the description provided in the Psalm. The Psalmist encourages his readers to respond to God with the service and respect that are due to him. The author and the occasion are not specified; but this Psalm plus Psalms 96, 98, and 100 have significant parallels with David's Psalm which is recorded in 1 Chronicles 16. This fact may give us the author (David) and the occasion (the dedication of the Tabernacle) for all four of these Psalms.

     The Psalmist, perhaps David, reminds us that the LORD reigns; and he calls on everyone and everything in the whole earth to rejoice, even in its distant places (1). He describes the LORD's manifestation at Sinai. Clouds and darkness surround him. Upon his throne he manifests his righteousness and his justice. A fire goes out before him and burns up his enemies which encircle him. His lightening enlighten the world; the earth trembles at the sight. The hills melt like wax at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth (2-5). The heavens declare his righteousness. The people see his glory, Everyone who serves idols and boasts of their power will be ashamed. Even the so-called gods will worship him (6-7). Zion (David's seat of government in Jerusalem) heard it and was glad. Judah (David's tribe, the leading tribe in Israel) rejoiced in the LORD's judgments because the LORD is high above all the earth and is exalted far above all gods (8-9). Those who love the LORD should hate evil. He preserves and delivers his saints out of the hand of the wicked. He sows light for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. Therefore, they should rejoice in the LORD and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness (10-12).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FOUR OF FIVE:

Psalms 90-106.

Psalm 97

1 The LORD reigneth;
let the earth rejoice;
let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.
2 Clouds and darkness are round about him:
righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.
3 A fire goeth before him,
and burneth up his enemies round about.
4 His lightnings enlightened the world:
the earth saw, and trembled.
5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD,
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6 The heavens declare his righteousness,
and all the people see his glory.
7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images,
that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

8 Zion heard, and was glad;
and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD.
9 For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth:
thou art exalted far above all gods.

10 Ye that love the LORD, hate evil:
he preserveth the souls of his saints;
he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the righteous,
and gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous;
and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
