Explanation: Around dawn on Sunday of the Passion week, an angel (accompanied by other angels) revealed to the women who were gathered at Jesus' tomb that he was risen. It seems that Mary Magdalene, who originally came with these women, was not among them when the angel delivered this message. By contrast, Magdalene's message to the apostles was that the body of Jesus was missing. But the women who heard the angel's message affirmed the resurrection. Luke 24:1-5 reveals that before the angelic revelation the women experienced a period of perplexity when they saw that Jesus' body was not in the tomb. Quite possibly, it was during this interlude that Magdalene bolted and ran to the apostles with her mistaken impression. The Hughes painting above omits Mary Magdalene from the vision of the angel, and is more in accord with the preceding interpretation.
