Explanation: During the Passover Meal on Thursday of the Passion Week, Judas withdrew (as depicted in the painting above) to bring the Jewish authorities to arrest Jesus. This was after Jesus secretly pointed him out as a traitor to John and Peter. No one suspected Judas; instead, each one suspected himself, and each one asked Jesus if he would be the traitor. After Judas withdrew, Jesus told his disciples how to relieve their fears: he told them that if they loved one another as Jesus had loved them, they would know that they were his disciples. A stark contrast to such love was about to manifest itself in the betrayal of Judas.

Matthew 26:21-25; Mark 14:18-21; Luke 22:21-23; John 13:21-35

John 13:21 When Jesus had thus [John 13:1-20] said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Mark 14:18b One of you which eats with me shall betray me. Luke 22:21 Behold, the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table. John 13:22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. Matthew 26:22a And they [Mark 14:19a began to be] exceeding sorrowful, Luke 22:23 And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. Matthew 26:22b And (they) began every one of them, [Mark 14:19b one by one,] to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
John 13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. John 13:24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spoke. John 13:25 He then lying on Jesus' breast said unto him, Lord, who is it? Mark 14:20 And [Jesus] answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dips [Matthew 26:23b his hand] with me in the dish. John 13:26b He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. Mark 14:21 The Son of man indeed goes, as it is written of him [Luke 22:22b as it was determined:] but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born. John 13:26b And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Matthew 26:25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, You have said.
John 13:27-35    27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That you do, do quickly. 28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spoke this unto him. 29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. 31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, you cannot come; so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.
