Explanation: On Tuesday of the Passion Week, the Jewish authorities tried to trap Jesus with difficult questions. They began by asking him whether it was lawful to pay tribute to Caesar or not. If he answered yes they could accuse him of breaking God's law by favoring Rome instead of paying tribute to God. If he answered no, they could accuse him of being a traitor to Rome. He answered by pointing to the image of Caesar on a coin, "Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21b). In other words, they had duties both to God and to the government.

Matthew 22:15-22; Mark 12:13-17; Luke 20:20-26

Matthew 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. Luke 20:20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies [Mark 12:13b certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians], which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. Matthew 22:16a And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, Mark 12:14a And when they were come, Luke 20:21a they asked him, saying, Matthew 22:16b Master, we know that you are true, and teach the way of God in truth, neither care you for any man: for you regard not the person of men. Matthew 22:17a Tell us therefore, What think you? Mark 12:14d Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? Mark 12:15a Shall we give, or shall we not give? Matthew 22:18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness [Mark 12:15b their hypocrisy, Luke 20:23 (and) their craftiness,] and said, Why tempt you me, you hypocrites? Matthew 22:19 Show me the tribute money. [Mark 12:15c bring me a penny, that I may see it.] And they brought unto him a penny. Mark 12:16b And he said unto them, Whose is this image and superscription. Luke 20:24b Whose image and superscription has it? Matthew 22:21 They said unto him, Caesar's. Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. Matthew 22:22a When they had heard these words, Luke 20:26 they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. Matthew 22:22c and left him, and went their way.
