Explanation: Near Bethany, Jesus attempted to find figs to eat on a fig tree near the road. It had none, so he cursed it. The next day it withered away. Jesus used this as a lesson in faith. And symbolically many have interpreted it as an example of the fruitlessness of the nation of Israel in the sight of God at that time.

Matthew 21:18-19a; Mark 11:12-14
Matthew 21:18 Now, [Mark 11:12 on the morrow,] in the morning [Mark 11:12 when they were come from Bethany,] as he returned into the city, he hungered.
Matthew 21:19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way [Mark 11:13 afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon:] he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only [Mark 11:13 for the time of figs was not yet.] [Mark 11:14 And Jesus answered and said unto it,] Let no fruit grow on you henceforward for ever. [Mark 11:14 (And) no man eat fruit of you hereafter for ever.] [Mark 11:14 And his disciples heard it.] And presently the fig tree withered away.
