Explanation: After exhorting his disciples to be faithful to God's standards (Luke 16), Jesus gave them a specific exhortation to to be faithful in forgiving those who offend them, even those who offend them repeatedly (Luke 17:1-10, see below). This startled them so much that they asked Jesus to increase their faith for such a task. But Jesus said that they already had enough faith to have this kind of forgiveness. Implicit in their complaint was the idea that this standard was asking too much of them. But Jesus answered this objection by reminding them that they ask their servants to fix them dinner even though they have put in a hard day of work and cannot eat till the master is served. Likewise, Jesus said, they should realize that even after they have done all that God commands them (such as forgiving abundantly), they have only done their duty and they are still unprofitable servants.

Luke 17:1-10

Luke 17:1-10      1Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offenses will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come! 2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. 3 Take heed to yourselves: If your brother trespasses against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. 4 And if he trespasses against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turns again to you, saying, I repent; you shall forgive him.
5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. 6 And the Lord said, If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you might say unto this sycamine tree, Be you plucked up by the root, and be you planted in the sea; and it should obey you. 7 But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? 8 And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird yourself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunk; and afterward you shalt eat and drink? 9 Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. 10 So likewise you, when you shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
