The Fall of Satan (1825)

Explanation: In the Scripture below, seventy disciples return to Jesus rejoicing that even the devils (demons) are subject to them; and, in response, Jesus said that he saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. This was one of several falls of Satan depicted or implied in Scripture. In the illustration above, William Blake shows one such fall of Satan and his angels with Job and his wife and friends as onlookers. Throughout history God has toppled Satan from power. Since Jesus' time, wherever the Gospel goes and converts the hearts of men, Satan falls; and God's servants help bring about those falls, as was the case with the seventy disciples Jesus sent out. Nevertheless, Jesus told his disciples not to rejoice in this power, but to rejoice that their names were written in heaven. Furthermore, he said that the revelation they received of the Father from the Son and of the Son from the Father was more blessed than the power they had experienced by casting out demons.

Section 96
Luke 10:17-24
Luke 10:17-24 17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through your name.
18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in your sight.
22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knows who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that you see:
24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which you see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which you hear, and have not heard them.
